International Society for Professional Identity in Nursing Annual Symposium: A Virtual Event
Professional Identity in Nursing (PIN) Charting a New Path Forward
Call for Abstracts: Podium and Poster
Criteria and Guidelines
Symposium Description:
Join us for an interactive symposium to learn about the latest developments in the science of Professional Identity in Nursing. Engage in creating the future directions of practice, policy, research, and education. Sponsored by the International Society for Professional Identity in Nursing (ISPIN), this virtual conference welcomes all US and international students and nurses, to learn and engage with the Professional Identity in Nursing initiative. All podiums and poster presentations must reference the PIN Model, as this is the language of nursing.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
Discuss the measurement status of PIN and discuss future applications.
Explore strategies to streamline the PIN movement to formal nurse leaders.
Engage in discussions on the next steps in advancing the science and implementation of PIN.
Identify strategies to enhance collaboration to foster PIN in practice, policy, research, and education.
Podium and Poster Abstract Guidelines:
Please submit your abstract for consideration at this year’s 2025 Annual Symposium. Scholarly work such as evidence-based projects, quality improvement projects, literature reviews, and research are welcome. Submitted abstracts should coincide with the symposium’s purpose and objectives listed below. In addition, the abstracts should be based on ISPIN’s definitions for professional identity in nursing and the four domains of ethics/values, knowledge, nurse as leader, and professional comportment. Criteria for each category of scholarly work appear below.
-
“…a sense of oneself, and in relationship with others, that is influenced by the characteristics, norms, and values of the nursing discipline, resulting in an individual thinking, acting, and feeling like a professional nurse.”
-
Ethics/Values: A set of core values and principles that guide conduct.
Knowledge: Analysis and application of information derived from nursing and other disciplines, experiences, critical reflection, and scientific discovery.
Nurse as Leader: Inspiring self and others to transform a shared vision into reality.
Professional Comportment: A nurse’s professional behavior demonstrated through words, actions, and presence.
Abstract Guidelines:
General Guidelines
Identify your abstract as a Podium presentation, Poster presentation, or either.
Label your abstract as research, evidence- based and/or quality improvement project, or literature review.
Use the specific criteria listed below (research, evidence-based and/or quality improvement project, and literature review) in writing your abstract.
All abstracts must be submitted through this online format before the deadline.
Overall word limit is 300 words, excluding headers and references.
Presenters (at least one per abstract) are expected to register, attend the conference, and pay the registration fee.
Note that the conference language will be English.
Deadlines
The deadline for abstract submission is 1 August 2025, at Midnight ET. Use the guidelines above to construct your abstract. Submitted abstracts will undergo a peer review process. Abstract acceptance will be communicated via email to the corresponding author by 1 September 2025.
Upon your abstract acceptance, use criteria below to construct your presentation. The presentation must be submitted by 1 October 2025, Midnight ET.
Posters
Electronic posters will be a one slide PowerPoint slide and available for viewing on the Symposium 2025 website for enduring materials. Each accepted poster will be requested to submit a short narration to accompany their presentation. This audio should be less than five (5) minutes in length.
Criteria and Guidelines
Participants will present their research, evidence-based project, quality improvement project, and/or literature review on an e-poster. Participants can decide how best to design their poster, but they should keep in mind that the content should be large enough for participants to read. All posters should include author(s) contact information such as name, organization, and email.
Some items to consider including in each type of poster are listed below.
Research: A systematic investigation used to generate generalizable knowledge about a phenomenon. Research can be either completed or in progress. Information should be included at a minimum and/or as appropriate:
Title
Purpose and Background/Significance: State the purpose of the study and why it is important to nursing science, practice and/or patient care.
Theoretical/Conceptual Framework: Include conceptual and operational definitions.
Method: Describe the study design, sample, instruments used, and data collection procedures (Include proposed data collection and analysis if the project is not complete).
Results: Discuss findings within the context of prior research, conceptual framework, and study limitations.
Conclusions: Explain what the findings mean for the science of nursing.
References: Include those that are pertinent
Evidence-Based and/or Quality Improvement Projects: This category encompasses projects that exemplify the application of best evidence from research and practice to inform the delivery of high-quality care. EBP projects start with a clinical problem or quality concern, evaluate the literature for best practices related to the concern, and implement evidence-based practice, system, and/or policy changes to address the concern. EBP projects should highlight recommendations for clinical practice, future research, and policy change. Projects can be either completed or in progress.
Title
Nature and scope of the project (Introduction, problem identification, significance, project objectives).
Synthesis and analysis of supporting literature. Describe the evidence-based solution. How was it developed? Include the theoretical framework if applicable.
Project implementation: Describe the implementation process, identify the model used, and significant challenges encountered. Include plans for implementation if the project is not complete.
Evaluation criteria: Provide details of your method for evaluating the success of the project. Include proposed evaluation criteria if the project is not complete.
Outcomes: What were the outcomes of the project? How were the outcomes measured?
Recommendations: Describe your recommendations for clinical practice and policy based on the outcomes of the evidence-based practice project.
References: Include those that are pertinent
Literature Review: A literature review is a comprehensive examination of the existing literature related to a specific clinical problem.
Title
Problem: Describe the health care issue the evidence review addresses. Provide support for the significance of the problem.
Purpose: State the objectives of this inquiry relative to the overall evidence-based literature review on this topic.
Search Strategy: Identify the databases searched, the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the keywords used.
Results of Literature Search: Describe the search, number of studies included, and level of evidence. Include a summary table of your evidence in the poster.
Synthesis of Evidence: Briefly describe the synthesis of the evidence that includes major trends and notable gaps.
Implications for Practice: Include your recommendations for practice, education, or future research based on the review and synthesis of the evidence.
References: Include those that are pertinent
